FAQ
Why are calls to the treasurer's office answered by a machine?
We often have more telephones ringing than there are people available to answer them. During those busy times, rather than let calls go unanswered or be constantly busy, we have installed a voice mail system that we frequently check for messages during the day. Since our budget restricts the number of people that we can have available to answer the telephone, and sometimes there are thousands of people trying to get through at the same time, the common practice of pushing the "0" button to be connected to an operator will not accomplish anything because all persons in our office are otherwise occupied.

You may also leave messages after our office is closed, and we will attempt to return the call the next business day - to another voice mail or answering machine, if necessary. This means that we may still be able to provide you with the information that you need even if you cannot call during our normal office hours. Please be sure that your message includes your phone number and address or tax id number so that we can provide you with the information that you need when we return your call. Because different people return messages at different times during the day, if you leave more than one message you will probably get more than one return call.

Please be aware that electronic voicemail recording systems are subject to the same failures that any mechanical system is. Occasionally a spike in the telephone lines will cause small bits of data (such as a digit in a phone number) to become lost. Because we return 98% of our messages within 24 hours, if you don't get a return call within that amount of time, it is possible that we were not able to glean enough information in order for us to return your call. In that case, the only solution is for you to leave another message in the hope that the same failure will not occur twice.
