Tax exemptions are filed in the Auditor's Office. To be effective for a particular year, they must be filed on or before the due date. Please check with the Auditor's Office for more information. When filing for a mortgage exemption, you will need to know who holds your mortgage and the approximate balance. An exemption means that a certain amount will be deducted from your assessed valuation. This may or may not be enough to completely cancel your property tax liability.
